When shopping for wheat straw cups or plates, customers often ask:
If it contains plastic, is it really safe?
What percentage is plastic?
Can it go in the microwave?
Is it dishwasher safe?
How is the color added?
These are important questions — especially for products used every day.

Wheat straw tableware is made from:
Natural wheat straw fiber
Food-grade polypropylene (PP)
Our products contain approximately wheat straw fiber and food-grade polypropylene.
Wheat straw is an agricultural byproduct repurposed into reusable household goods instead of being discarded or burned.

Wheat straw fiber alone cannot form durable drinkware.
Food-grade polypropylene is added to:
Bind plant fibers together
Improve structural strength
Increase impact resistance
Support heat tolerance
Without it, the material would crack or break easily.
The polypropylene used is:
BPA-free
Non-toxic
Odorless
Approved for food contact
Polypropylene (PP) is widely used in food storage containers and kitchenware throughout the United States.
Its inclusion ensures durability and safe daily use.
Wheat straw products made with food-grade PP are microwave safe for reheating.
They are suitable for:
Warming leftovers
Heating beverages
Everyday food use
For best performance, avoid extended high-heat cycles or empty heating.
The material is designed to handle normal household microwave temperatures.
These products are also dishwasher safe.
They can be cleaned on the top rack of a standard dishwasher without warping or color fading under normal use.
The color is blended into the material during molding — not painted on — so it won’t peel or chip over time.
Color is incorporated during manufacturing using food-safe pigments.
Because the pigment is mixed into the base material:
The color runs throughout the product
It does not sit on the surface
It does not flake off into food
This structural coloring process improves long-term durability.
While not 100% biodegradable due to polypropylene content, wheat straw products:
Repurpose agricultural byproducts
Reduce reliance on fully petroleum-based plastics
Provide a reusable alternative to single-use items
They are designed to balance sustainability with strength and longevity.
Wheat straw drinkware offers:
BPA-free materials
Food-grade construction
Microwave-safe performance
Dishwasher-safe cleaning
Lightweight yet durable design
For families looking for a safer reusable alternative, understanding the material composition provides clarity and confidence.
I like the look, shape, and size of these bowls. They have a nice pattern on the outside and we like the color we chose. For being lightweight, these bowls are quite sturdy and feel like they will last for many years. They clean up great in the dishwasher.
And made out of straw so they are good for the environment and you could throw one across the room and not break it. Pretty colors. Would definitely buy again if I needed more.
It's a little misleading to call these an "Alternative for Plastic Plates" because they are made of plastic. The hydrocarbons in this case come from chemically processing wheat straw instead of petrochemical products but the end result is still plastic, so if you are worried about microplastics, look elsewhere. Having said that, they work well as reusable kids plates for our 3 and 7 year old. They are a good size and the ~1" lip is a good depth to allow kids to scoop food against the edges without losing it onto the table. We've been running them almost exclusively in the bottom rack of the dishwasher for almost 2 years without issues with them warping or changing color. The one issue with using the dishwasher is that because the plates are made of plastic (in particular a matte plastic, not a shiny plastic), oils from foods like to stick to them more than ceramic or glass plates. Therefore, I find I need to hand scrub them with dish soap and a brush before putting them in the dishwasher if the meal had a moderate amount of oil in it. Maybe this isn't an issue for some dishwashers or dishwasher soaps but for our efficient, quite KitchenAid dishwasher it does seem to be necessary after some meals.
